Frequently Asked Questions

Who do you help?

ChainFree Chattanooga supports dogs and their owners in the Chattanooga area - specifically Hamilton County, Tennessee - who practice continuous tethering of their dogs and do not have the resources to provide them with a proper enclosure at no cost to them. We also help those keeping their dogs in small kennels or enclosures. We work with pet owners to provide spay and neuter resources, education, and direct assistance to improve the living conditions of tethered dogs.

Why is continuous tethering of dogs harmful?

Continuous tethering is detrimental to a dog's physical and mental health. Dogs are social animals that require interaction, exercise, and mental stimulation. When constantly chained, they experience extreme psychological stress, leading to increased aggression, anxiety, and depression. Physically, tethered dogs are vulnerable to extreme weather conditions, have limited movement, and are at higher risk of injury or entanglement. They cannot escape threats, cannot play or explore, and are often denied basic needs like proper shelter, consistent access to water, and regular veterinary care. Prolonged tethering can also lead to serious health issues, behavioral problems, and significantly reduced quality of life.

I know of a dog in need! What do I do?

If you've identified a dog who is being continuously tethered, contact ChainFree Chattanooga. Our team will investigate the situation, contact the dog's owners, and offer support and resources.
